First of all, we are going to have a lot of EDUCATIONAL FUN this year!

What types of sources will be used in this class? We will use the textbooks, newspapers (occasionally), & many different primary and secondary sources.  In addition, in order to stay on top of current events, T.V. can be used.  From time to time, a movie may be scheduled to reinforce what we are learning in class as well.  The Internet will be utilized for historical research and laptops will be used to create Power Point presentations which will be shown on the SmartBoard!

What materials should I have for this class? Please always have a Social Studies notebook open in my class as notes will be taken.  You should have a Social Studies folder to help with organizational skills and always have a sharpened pencil or pen ready to go every day.

Connecting to Social Studies-This class will allow students to make connections to different people and various cultures around the world!  For example, each student will learn how urban, suburban, and rural lifestyles are similar in many ways.  In addition, students in American History will recognize the connection of the original American government to our modern day system of democracy.

Reinforcing the importance of Social Studies-

1.  Social Studies teaches us about all cultures and opens our minds to different beliefs.

2.  Social Studies teaches us to be open-minded, tolerant, and respectful of people who are different from us.  We learn from being exposed to diversity.

3.  When we engage in writing and reading, we benefit from it directly no matter what the subject is.

4.  We learn to use new vocabulary.

5. We become well-rounded students of the world.

What can I do on my own?  Student creativity is greatly encouraged!  Students will be motivated to create original work and come up with their own ideas.  Sharing thoughts and showing off work in class is a big part of Social Studies!

Awards- Students will be recognized for attendance, homework, test scores, effort, participation, and good citizenship in this class!

Groups-Each student will work in a group to learn the importance of getting along with each other, cooperation, and respect.

Progressfolio's-Each student will have their own progressfolio in which much of their work will be collected throughout the year.
