Civilizations developed along rivers because rivers provide fertile soil for growing crops and
water for irrigation, drinking, and transportation. Rivers allow trade to take place and cities to expand. The
Fertile Crescent was a very green area through which the Euphrates and Tigris Rivers flowed. The ancient Greeks called
the region between the Euphrates and Tigris, Mesopotamia.
A drought is a long period without rain.

 A ziggurat was a flattened pyramid made of mud-brick. (see picture above)
The first wheels were solid
rounds of wood. Sumerian wheelwrights improved the design by binding the wheels in leather.
The Sumerians hero was named Gilgamesh. They believed that Gilgamesh was omniscent (all-knowing),
part God, part man, and strong as an ox.
