Han rulers made the following important change to government:

*jobs were given to educated people as opposed to nobles

The Grand School prepared students to become good citizens by educating them in Chinese history and appropriate behavior, and by preparing good students for jobs as government workers or teachers.

Quick Facts:

Medicine in Ancient China-Acupuncture treats physical illness by pricking the body with needles at points that are considered to be connected with the organs causing the problem.  Acupuncture was developed in ancient China.

Chinese medicine also involved the use of herbs.  Chinese herbalists were the first to use iodine (obtained from seaweed).  Iodine was used to treat goiter which is a thyroid condition.

Hua T'o was a physician who used anesthesia while performing surgery around 300 B.C.

"Rough straw" paper was probably used for important writings.  It took a long time to make so they wouldn't waste it!  The material for paper was steamed twice in 45 days.

Under the early Han dynasty, the emperor issued all laws, acted as the final judge, and served as chief priest at religious ceremonies.

The landowners were very powerful and that is probably true because they controlled most of the land.  Land was very valuable as it was needed to grow crops and feed the people.

Art Connection-The emperor Wudi created one of the greatest parks of all time.  The park was constructed to look like a small version of the empire which was surrounded by a wall 100 miles long!  The wall contained rivulets that represented China's great mounds (mountains) and rivers.  In addition, the park had specimens of every animal and plant in the empire and even the world.  One specialty that the park exihibited was the Indian rhinoceros.
