The Language of Rome
The Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, and Romanian
languages all come from Latin which is the first language of the Roman Empire. These languages are called Romance languages
because of their Roman/Latin origin.
Greek colonists were attracted to Sicily because of its rich farmland.
Rome's geographical features helped it become a world leader. Rome's 7 hills protected it from attack,
the Tiber River made a great "highway" for travel between the mountains and the Mediterranean coast, and plenty
of eruptions of the volcanoes surrounding the Latium plain created rich farmland that produced outstanding amounts of crops.

The enriching of soil by lava is similar but different from soil erosion. Both destroy plants and animals
but lava enrichs soil and erosion wears it away.
Mountains that isolate the city from invasion, fertile farmland
and plains, and a navigable river were key reasons for city development.
