Ancient Africa
Africa is sometimes called the "birthplace of the human
race" because fossils show that humans have lived there for 2 million years.
Some experts believe that people
living in the Middle East were the first to learn how to farm. It is possible that their knowledge spread westward across
northern Africa.
At one time Africans farmed the region we now call the Sahara Desert. In addition, for
thousands of years the Sahara Desert was vast grassland.

Cities of West Africa acquired wealth from their trade in salt and gold.

Africa has extremely diverse geography such as a large desert in the north and rolling plains in the south.

Africa's rain forest are located in West Africa and the Congo River basin. These rain forests receive
from 60 to 100 inches of rain per year.

The Great Rift Valley separates western and eastern Africa.

Mount Kilimanjaro has snow on top of it even though it is located near the equator because of its high elevation
which creates a lower temperature.

The horn-shaped Somali peninsula, which reaches into the Indian Ocean below the Gulf of Aden, is typically referred
to as the "horn of Africa" or the "African horn".

The promontories at each side of the Strait of Gibraltar, which divides Africa from Europe, are usually called
the "Pillars of Hercules".
