The Kingdom of Aksum
The kinds of goods that were traded in Aksum were ivory,
cloth, rhinoceros horns, and gold.
(rhino. ivory)
Control of a trade route would make Aksum wealthy because trade routes attracted people and
goods to Aksum. Aksum was able to participate in profitable trading, build up businesses that supported trade centers,
and possibly gain from fees or taxes paid by traders doing business there.
The kings of Aksum built huge stone
pillars or stelae for the purpose of celebrating all of their military victories.

(The Fallen Obelisk of Aksum)
Gold got to the Roman Empire because Aksum traders acquired gold from southern
mines, then brought the gold back to Aksum to trade with the Romans.
Aksum's strategic location and outstanding
achievements made it a major force in East Africa.

 (The flag of Aksum)
King Ezana brought the kingdom of Aksum to its greatest power.
