Take a look at the pictures on pages 334-335.  You can say that after the fall of Rome, Europe experienced a period of tremendous change, made distinct by peace and war, and a new founding of religious change, learning, and classical art.

Europe

Europe is the second-smallest continent with 4,063,000 sq. mi. of land.

Europe has 47 countries.

Russia is the largest country.

A lot of Russia is in Asia (6.6. million sq. mi).

The smallest country is Vatican City (not even a full sq. mi.)

*More than 2oo languages are spoken in Europe.

European Geography

Europe, in general, has a mild climate.

Europe is surrounded by H20 so it is extremely navigable.

Some of Europe's first cities developed along rivers because transportation would be easier.  Rivers also powered waterwheels for grinding wheat.

Culture

Europe's mountain chains encouraged the development of distinctive cultural regions because they made it difficult to travel, separated Europe into different geographic regions, thereby creating distinctive cultural regions.

Europe's Natural Resources

*Coal and iron were very helpful in supplying fuel esp. during the Industrial Revolution.

*Now most iron ore is gone but coal is still around in great quantities.

*EC->What is potash and bauxite?

We listened to "Blue Danube Waltz" by Johann Strauss on this page.  What do you think Strauss was thinking about when he wrote this song?  What were some of the sights he saw?  What was he inspired by?
