THE RENAISSANCE

Trade and workshops that produced goods for trade made Florence a rich city.  In addition, the banking business of the Medici's also contributed to Florence's wealth.

Lorenzo Medici's actions encouraged the Renaissance in Florence as he supported the arts and artists, which prompted many artists and scholars to move to Florence.

The Medici family was similar to a modern international bank.  They had branch offices in many cities in addition to their headquarters in Florence.  They made their profit by charging borrowers a percentage of the money they borrowed.

Renaissance writers began to write in their own languages, instead of in Latin, so that local readers could read their works.

Petrarch became the most famous poet in Europe.  Although he wrote in Italian, translations of his poetry made him the most famous European poet of his day.

Christine de Pisan was different from most women writers of her time as she did not write about personal subjects, as most women writers of the Renaissance did.  Instead, she wrote political commentaries, histories, and poems.

Machiavelli gave advice to rulers because they needed to know how to run their government efficiently.

Machiavelli and The Prince

Machiavelli was an Italian diplomat and writer who lived during a time of  great political instability as Italian city-states, the Holy Roman Empire, and other nations were all battling for power.

Machiavelli viewed politics based on human nature, not religion.  In The Prince, Machiavelli advised a ruler to avoid being hated by not taking away property, to "appear" religious, and to be feared, rather than loved.

Michelangelo was born near Florence in 1475.  At 12 he was apprenticed to one of Florence's popular painters, Ghirlandaio.

When Michelangelo was 16, Lorenzo Medici invited him to join a group of artists!

FOR THE NEXT 50 YEARS, MICHELANGELO PRODUCED SOME OF THE WORLD'S GREATEST SCULPTURES AND PAINTINGS.

When Michelangelo turned 75, he decided to retire his paint brush and go into poetry and architecture.

Galileo had a homemade telescope that he used to view the heavens.  Galileo saw that the heavens were "perfect and unchanging", as he thought at one time.

Galileo saw a supernova, sunspots, the phases of Venus, and the satellites of Jupiter.
