Chan Buddhism (Zen)

This form of Buddhism came from India to China.  There are 3 key features:

*sitting meditation (zazen) ->this involves awareness of the breath and quieting of the mind
*the use of koans (freeing your mind of illogical problems) ->an example of a Zen koan is "What is the sound of one hand clapping?"
*life awareness

The Forbidden City

*located in the center of Beijing
*has 9 separate housing complexes
*the number 9 holds special meaning in the design
*the nails on every door are arranged in lines of 9
*9=most important number (only emperors could use it)





Samurai and Zen

*samurai means "to serve"
*most samurai practiced Shinto and were highly influenced by Zen Buddhism (which taught serenity when facing death)
*Zen is connected to Bushido which is the Way of the Warrior and to the earliest martial arts forms: aikido, karate, and kendo.
